The US economy added 290,000 net new jobs in April, a strong report even if about 20% of those jobs were temporary census workers. However, economists estimate that about 125,000 net new jobs are needed every month just to keep up with population growth.

The unemployment rate rose from 9.7% to 9.9% in April, as more people entered the job market than those who found jobs.
